(d.651)
Aidan was the founder and first bishop of the monastery on Lindisfarne. He was Irish, and was believed to spend time as a monk in a monastery on the Scottish island of Iona.
In 634, he was appointed by Oswald to assist in the return of Christianity to the people of Northumbria.
He would walk from village to village, talking with the people on their own level, slowly interesting them in Christianity. This is how Aidan managed to restore Northumbria. In addition to this, as Aidan and his monks spoke very poor if any English at all, he took 12 English boys and trained them so that the future leadership would be in English.
Feast - 31st August
