St Bega of Egremont, was a saint who lived in the Dark Ages in what was known as the Celtic Kingdom of Rheged.
Believed to be the daughter of an Irish King, she was promised in marriage to the a Viking prince. Bega fled across the Irish Sea to land now known as St. Bees, where she lived for a little while. Fearing the rapids of pirates that were stating along the coast, she moved to Northumbria.
Feast - 6th September
Churches in Eskdale and Bassenthwaite as well as the Priory at St. Bees are dedicated to St Bega.
