Herbert was a priest and hermit who lived on a small island in Derwentwater. He was a close friend of St Cuthbert and visited him every year to recieve his spiritual directions. On meeting Cuthbert at Carlisle, Herbert was informed that Cuthbert had only a short time left to live, upon which he weeped and requested that they should both praise God in heaven at the same time, and on 20th March 687, both Herbert and Cuthbert entered into rest.
