As the Rector of St Michael’s Workington I was delighted today to receive an anonymous donation of a new St Georges Flag – this one bears the crest of the Diocese of Carlisle.

The donor said that since we, at St Michael’s, regularly pray for the members of our armed forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan they’d bought the flag in the hope that we would agree to fly the flag until the conflict out there is resolved and the members of our armed forces can return safely home. It could be a public witness and a reminder to us all in the community and the families and those serving that they are always in our prayers. St Michael’s is, and always has been, a caring church and this gesture touched me so much that I was delighted to accept the gift, and to
be able to fly the flag. So as you see our new flag flying - remember those serving on our behalf – as we remember them each week in our prayer.

On Saturday 23rd April 2011, St George's Day, a new flag was hoisted above St Michael's. Our flag flies constantly as a reminder of our support and prayers for our armed forces serving in Afghanistan. Our grateful thanks go to Mr JoeTunstall for his kind donation of the new flag."

Nb- our flags last approximately 4 months before they need to be replaced. Anyone interested in making a donation towards a new flag should contact the parish office on (01900) 604450.
